The Catfish Genus Tetranematichthys (Auchenipteridae)

چکیده

The neotropical auchenipterid catfish genus Tetranematichthys is reviewed. Tetranematichthys was previously thought to be monotypic with its single species, T. quadrifilis, reported to have a broad range encompassing major portions of the Amazon basin and southern tributaries of the Rı́o Orinoco. Tetranematichthys quadrifilis was rather found to be endemic to the Rio Guaporé in the southwestern portions of the Amazon basin and a new species of the genus is described from material originating in the upper Rio Negro system in Brazil and Venezuela and the upper Rı́o Orinoco basin in southern Venezuela. The new species is also apparently widespread within the Amazon basin and the southern and north-central portions of the Rı́o Orinoco system. The species of Tetranematichthys have distinctive modifications of the mandibular barbel and associated systems, which are proposed as synapomorphic for the species of the genus and that potentially function as a fishing lure.

Ectoparasites as numerical dominant species in parasite community of Trachelyopterus striatulus (Siluriformes: Auchenipteridae) from Guandu River, southeastern Brazil.

Sixty specimens of singing catfish Trachelyopterus striatulus (Steindachner, 1877) (Siluriformes: Auchenipteridae) collected from Guandu River (22º 48' 32" S and 43º 37' 35" W), in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from October 2006 to March 2009, were necropsied to study their parasites. From the 60 specimens of T. striatulus examined 57 were parasitised by at least one parasite species. The...

Comparative chromosomal analysis and evolutionary considerations concerning two species of genus Tatia (Siluriformes, Auchenipteridae)

Auchenipteridae is divided in two subfamilies, Centromochlinae and Auchenipterinae. Centromochlinae has 31 valid species, from which 13 are included in the genus Tatia Miranda Ribeiro, 1911. Among these, Tatia jaracatia Pavanelli & Bifi, 2009 and Tatia neivai (Ihering, 1930) are the only two representative species from the Paraná-Paraguay basins. This study aimed to analyze cytogenetically thes...

Frezella gen. n. is proposed to accommodate Frezella vaucheri sp. n. from poorly known auchenipterid fish, Tocantinsia piresi (Miranda Ribeiro), from the Xingú River, one of the principal tributaries of the lower Amazon River in Brazil. The new genus belongs to the Proteocephalinae because of the medullary position of the testes, ovary (yet some follicles penetrate to the cortex on the dorsal s...

Sperm of Doradidae (Teleostei: Siluriformes).

Spermatic characteristics were studied in 10 species representing several distinct groups within the catfish family Doradidae. Interestingly, different types of spermatogenesis, spermiogenesis and spermatozoa are correlated with intrafamilial groups previously proposed for Doradidae. Semi-cystic spermatogenesis, modified Type III spermiogenesis, and biflagellate sperm appear to be unique within...
